Paper Planes: Seripop Takes Over YYZ

Montreal artist duo Seripop dislike the contemporary art label “site-specific,” prefering the term “site-responsive.” Because if the former moniker implies art-making that engages with an immutable set of characteristics in a given location, “site-responsive” suggests work that tweaks such attributes. Site-responsive art might consider a space as a skeleton or frame, which at first glance supports an endeavor yet opens itself up to interventions, adjustments, and alterations. In installations like “J’m’en suis déjà souvenu” (2012) and “Avancez en arrière” (also 2012), Seripop’s Chloe Lum and Yannick Desranleau highlight the very surface of their target site, embellishing each location with a degree of experiential and perceptual traction.

“J’m’en suis” continues Seripop’s catalogue of paper works, an installation built from layers of screen-painted paper covering the floor of Montreal’s Complexe Guy Favreau; foot traffic wore away the surface, revealing torn, scattered remnants of color. It appeared as a reversal of more static modernist décollage. In “Avancez,” Lum and Desranleau expanded their process, instating another series of paper layers over the façade of a generic building in downtown Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, southeast of Montreal. Over the course of several months, the exposed paper wore down and tore apart, resulting in a fragmentary tableau on the structure’s surface, before the building’s own demolition. Composed to more grandiose visions in large-scale projects with architectural façades (think Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s famous “Wrapped Reichstag” project in Berlin), Seripop’s intervention illustrated processes of natural and political attrition.

As Lum and Desranleau mentioned to BLOUIN ARTINFO Canada at a recent open studio event, their installational work aims precisely to explore formal processes of collapse, degradation, and failure. “It’s about entropy, setting things up to fail, and exploiting that,” Desranleau said. Formerly of experimental music group AIDS Wolf, Lum and Desranleau have worked as partners since 2000, earning local and national recognition not only with a series of successful band and event posters, but for their clever, striking prints and installations as Seripop. Three exhibitions are already slated for the end of this year and early 2014, starting with an upcoming large-scale piece titled “Looming” at Toronto’s YYZ gallery, for which they gave a small preview at their Mile End studio last week.
