Program : MFA Studio Art – Photography – ongoing

Colin Hill is an abstract painter and mixed media artist currently pursuing MFA candidacy at NSCAD University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. An American citizen, Colin was born in 1978 in London, U.K. His early life was spent living abroad and moving has been thematic to his life. The concepts of place/displace, space, and the familiar/unfamiliar in relation to the temporal are feelings that connect to the artwork in some way. Colin is the father of a four-year-old daughter and has been happily married for 6 years.

I am a painter, and I love to paint. Immersing myself in the process is a way of getting lost on purpose to find myself in a different place. I try my best to disregard what it is that the paint is supposed to do, so that searching and getting lost become tangible methods of working and the potential for discovery within the surface becomes real.
The paintings are histories of process. The visible artifacts of process are principal in each finished work. The beginnings and endings of my process often involve scraps and residue from the floor of my studio and debris from the street. The surfaces are built up, washed out, stripped down, scrubbed away, sanded down and scraped away again and again. I work on hard supports that can withstand these actions of sanding, scraping and gouging. The works go through many teardowns, erasures and accretions before the final surface emerges: a space that contains an image of its own history.
